Leland Police Department Commends Officers for Exemplary Service

Police Awards

The Leland Police Department is recognizing multiple officers for their hard work and dedication to foster a safe community for all Leland residents. The awards honored work done throughout 2023.

The Chief’s Award recognizes the effort of individuals within the department who exceed expectations to maintain public safety. The Police Chief selects the recipient after considering options presented by the command staff. Detective Robert Britton received this award due to his hard work in criminal investigations over the past five years, specifically his work in internet crimes against children. Detective Britton has been with the Town for more than six years, starting as a Patrol Officer and transferring to Criminal Investigations in 2020.

The Officer of the Year Award is presented to the officer who excels in law enforcement while modeling the Town’s core values of respect, communication, engagement, supportive work environment, and service excellence. Every officer in the department under the rank of Lieutenant votes on the award. Detective Benjamin Majors received the 2023 Officer of the Year Award for expanding the department’s community outreach efforts over the past year and a half. Detective Majors served as an Officer with the Town for more than two years before transferring to Community Outreach in 2022. He became a Detective earlier this year.

Leland Police Officers must stay up to date on effective law enforcement operations, so the department is also highlighting the officers who have continued to further their education and experience. Detective Andrew Gaston and Master Officer Terry received their Advanced Law Enforcement Certification by completing more than 300 hours of approved law enforcement training, having more than six years of law enforcement experience, and completing their bachelor’s degrees. Sergeant Jonathan Berry completed the Criminal Investigation Certificate Program by completing more than 400 hours of approved law enforcement training in this area. Sergeant Chris Winder received the Traffic Crash Investigation and Reconstruction Certificate by completing more than 400 hours of approved law enforcement training in this area.
