Why is Addressing Important?

Your Address is how Emergency Services such as Fire, Ambulance, and Police find you during an emergency!  Many people, even those in Public Safety, view Enhanced 9-1-1 as the solution to all emergency response problems. 9-1-1 in and of itself is a great emergency response tool, but without accurate and consistent address information it cannot always be counted on to help speed up emergency response. Of the total parts that comprise the Enhanced 9-1-1 system, addressing can be considered one of the most vital parts.

Who do I contact if I have an addressing question or need an address assigned?

If you are in the Town of Leland you will contact the Planning Tech in the Development Services Department.           (910-371-3390) or vist the Development Services Web page.

If my address is changed how long will I receive mail at my old address?

The post office will deliver mail to your previous address for up to one year after you are re-addressed, however, your new number must be posted within thirty (10) days of readdress and the old number removed.

What size numbers do I need to display my address and where do I display my address?

Property owners should be aware that once they are notified of the correct address they are responsible for the proper posting of their address.

Address numbers on buildings which are less than fifty feet from the street or driving lane of the parking lot for plazas, multi-tenant or rear access shall affix numbers directly over the main egress door and all other means of egress.  Address numbers shall contrast with the surrounding surface be of durable material and a minimum of three (3") inches in height and one-half (1/2") inch in width. Buildings which are over fifty (50) feet from the street shall be required to use five (5") inch or larger numbers.

Who do I notify about my new address?

Addressing Staff will notify the Town’s departments, the Post Office, utilities, the County GIS/ addressing department and the 9-11 system.   You will want to contact the Department of Motor Vehicles and any   personal concerned parties such as your correspondents, bank, Mortgage Company, insurance company, credit card companies, cellular phone carrier, etc.

If I am on a corner lot why can’t I use the street designation of my choice?

Street designations are defined in the addressing policies and must fit the criteria outlined to ensure proper services.

Why do I have to change my address?

We only change addresses if it is a necessity. There are a number of reasons your property may require re-addressing. The street name may have changed, your address number may be out of sequence, you may be an odd number on the even side of the street, etc.  Property owners should be aware that once they are notified of an address change they become liable and refusal to change an address could result in penalties.
