Employee Profile:
Ashli Barefoot, Code Enforcement Officer
Ashli
Barefoot recently joined the Town of Leland as a Code
Enforcement Officer.
Ashli
is originally from the Johnston County, N.C. town of
Clayton. She moved to the Wilmington area about
six years ago to pursue her undergraduate degree at UNCW.
"As I entered into my
second year of graduate school, I realized that I
couldn’t see myself living anywhere else and decided to
make the Cape Fear region my home," says Ashli.
Ashli
also says, "In my spare time, I like to shop – a lot.
:-)
- and go offshore fishing. If its warm out and I'm not
at work, you can find me out on the boat."
Ashli
completed degrees in Criminal Justice and Political
Science from UNCW in 2006. She continued her
education at UNCW, completing a Masters in Public
Administration (MPA) with concentrations in Urban and
Regional Planning and Policy as well as Public Policy
Analysis in 2008. Ashli also completed an
internship with the New Hanover County Planning
Department in 2007-08.
As code enforcement
officer, Ashli is part of the Town of Leland's
Development Services Department.
The department
is responsible for setting a positive direction for
sustainable growth throughout the Town. The
department provides mechanisms to create livable
communities while effectively managing development.
The code enforcement function pro-actively administers a
fair and unbiased effort to correct violations of the
Town of Leland’s Code of Ordinances and land use
requirements.

Enforcement officer is dedicated to protecting and
promoting public health, safety and welfare, while
ensuring every citizen the right to a clean, livable
community. Additionally, the Code Enforcement
officer serves as both an educator and a valuable
resource to ensure a healthy, safe environment.
Leland Police
Department announces 2008 Citizens' Police Academy
The Leland Police
Department is now accepting applications for its
2008 Citizens’ Police Academy. The academy, which
will be held on Wednesdays beginning May 7, will
provide participants with a greater understanding of
the police department’s operations and the functions
of different divisions within the department.
Graduation will be held at the Leland Town Council
meeting on July 17.

Town seeks
volunteers for Storm Drain Marking Program
The Town of Leland is
seeking volunteers for a town-wide storm drain marking
program. In an effort to protect local water
quality and help prevent pollution, markers like the one
posted below will be placed on all storm drains within
the Town limits. For more information, please

Events
April 14
- 19 -- Brunswick County Spring Cleanup
Free Disposal at Landfill: Brunswick
County’s Spring Clean Up week is Mon. April 14 through Sat. April
19. During this week, Brunswick County residents can dispose of all
materials, except regular household trash and land clearing
debris, for free. The free disposal applies to materials
brought to the landfill in Bolivia only; items will not be picked up
with your regular trash service. Businesses or anyone driving a
commercial vehicle or trailer will be charged regular tipping fees.
The four convenient sites will maintain regular fees during this
time. For more information, please call the Brunswick County Solid
Waste Department at 253-2520.
April 19 - Homecoming on the River Gospel Concert
The Homecoming on the River Gospel
Concert features The Pillar Music Group & Wilmington Celebration
Choir. The concert will be held Saturday, April 19 at 2:00
p.m. on the recreation field behind Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Drive
in Leland.
April 19 - Household Hazardous Waste Collection, Clothing
Drive and Electronic Recycling Event
9 a.m. - 2 p.m.:
Brunswick County will collect Household Hazardous Waste, clothing
and electronics at Shallotte Middle School on Saturday April 19,
2008 from 9 AM until 2 PM. This is a one-day collection only; items
will not be picked up with the regular trash service and will not be
accepted at the four convenient sites or at the landfill. This
collection will be free for county residents and farmers only; no
commercial or industrial waste will be accepted. Household
Hazardous Waste is materials that can be toxic, poisonous,
flammable, or corrosive. The following materials cannot be
accepted: radioactive materials, smoke detectors, infectious or
biological waste, propane cylinders, explosives, shock sensitive
materials (crystallized ethers, picric acids, etc.), non-household
materials, and containers greater than 5 gallons. For more
information on Household Hazardous Waste, contact the Brunswick
County Solid Waste Department at 253-2520. Electronics,
rechargeable batteries, and cellular phones will be collected for
recycling. Clothing will also be collected and given to a local
charity. Do your spring-cleaning, help your community, and reduce
the waste stream all at once with this clothes drive!
April 19 - May 3 - Litter Sweep Roadside Cleanup
The N.C. Department of Transportation's annual Litter
Sweep roadside cleanup will take place from April 19 - May 3.

April 21
- NC DOT Citizens' Informational Workshop
4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at Leland
Middle School, 927 Old Fayetteville Road in Leland. The NC DOT
will hold a citizens' informational workshop to discuss the proposed
interchange at the intersection of US 74 and Old Fayetteville Road.
