Leland Purchases Building for Community Center
The Town of Leland has closed on the purchase of an 18,000-square-foot building just off Highway 17 in the Magnolia Village Commercial Center for use as a community center.
The Town purchased the building for $560,000, just over a third of its tax value of $1,492,250. The Town estimates it will take $400,000 to $500,000 to complete and furnish the facility. It was originally constructed to house a Peak Fitness health club, but had sat vacant and unfinished for more than a year and had gone into foreclosure.
The facility will be designed as a community center for use by all Leland residents. The Town will hold a series of public meetings and forums in the coming months to help determine the needs and desires of the community. Based on the outcomes of those meetings and surveys, the Town will design a facility that accommodates those needs. Possible uses within the center include, but are not limited to, recreation programming, exercise, classroom activities, meetings, dining, performing arts and more.

Westgate Nature Park Receives Funding
The North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) Authority has awarded the Town of Leland a $500,000 grant to develop the Town’s first major park on nearly 150 acres on the south side of Highway 17 behind the Westgate commercial and residential area.
The project was selected as the state’s number one overall priority project for PARTF funds and received the maximum allocation allowed under the program.
The award will allow the Town to develop Phase I of the Westgate Nature Park, which will include 0.3 miles of 10’-wide paved and elevated boardwalk trails for hiking and biking, an outdoor classroom overlooking the wetlands environment, two age-appropriate playgrounds, picnic area, multipurpose field, parking, landscaping, utilities and associated amenities.

Leland Farmers' Market
The Town of Leland will host a monthly Farmers’ Market on the third Sunday of each month from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Leland Municipal Park (102 Town Hall Dr.) beginning June 20.
The Leland Farmers’ Market was developed to provide a place for local growers and producers to sell their goods directly to consumers, to educate consumers about local farming and seasonal eating, to encourage and promote the use of locally-grown farm products, and to enhance quality of life in Leland by providing a community activity that fosters social gathering and interaction.
The Town is currently seeking vendors of local food and agricultural products. No arts and crafts vendors will be accepted. If you are interested in becoming a vendor, please read the following rules and complete the below application and return to: Leland Farmers' Market, 102 Town Hall Dr., Leland NC 28451.

Director's Message
Welcome to the Town of Leland Department of Parks, Recreation and Environmental Programs’ Web site. This is an exciting time for Parks and Recreation in Leland. Since the department’s creation in the Fall of 2008, the Parks and Recreation Board and staff have been working diligently to create a variety of programs and events for the enjoyment of Leland citizens. The department has also been busy planning for the future by exploring opportunities for the development of new parks, trails and facilities. Be sure to check out the links to our Programs and Special Events pages to keep abreast of new and upcoming activities in the Town, and be on the lookout for plans for new park facilities to be added to the Parks page as we begin to work on them. Public input is extremely important as the department, like the Town, grows and expands.
Please feel free to contact me at the number above with any questions, concerns or ideas. Together, we can all make Leland an even better place to live and play!
