Leland Municipal Park

First opened on Founders Day 2004 and expanded in 2006, the Leland Municipal Complex Park is the Town’s first park. At nearly eight-acres in size, the park includes a playground, gazebo, picnic tables, benches, pet waste stations, open green spaces and a 0.6-mile paved multi-use path. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Public restrooms are available in the Leland Recreation Building from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Mill Creek Water Access Park
Made up of 27 acres of wetlands donated to the town in 2005 from Kirby Sullivan and 1.2 acres of uplands acquired with a 2007-2008 Coastal Waterfront Access Grant from the state Division of Coastal Management, the Mill Creek Water Access Park, located at 844 Appleton Way, provides citizens with the Town’s first water access site. The access is designated for people to launch kayaks, canoes, rowing shells and small motorized “Jon” boats. Future plans for the park include improvements to the boat launch area, the addition of docking, a boardwalk nature trail, parking improvements and other amenities. The goal of the project is to create a fully-functional neighborhood water access with an environmental education center that can be utilized by the public and local schools.

Leland Community Center (Planned)
The Town of Leland has closed on the purchase of an 18,000-square-foot building just off Highway 17 in the Magnolia Village Commercial Center for use as a community center. The Town purchased the building for $560,000, just over a third of its tax value of $1,492,250. The Town estimates it will take $400,000 to $500,000 to complete and furnish the facility. It was originally constructed to house a Peak Fitness health club, but had sat vacant and unfinished for more than a year and had gone into foreclosure. The facility will be designed as a community center for use by all Leland residents. The Town will hold a series of public meetings and forums in the coming months to help determine the needs and desires of the community. Based on the outcomes of those meetings and surveys, the Town will design a facility that accommodates those needs. Possible uses within the center include, but are not limited to, recreation programming, exercise, classroom activities, meetings, dining, performing arts and more.
Westgate Nature Park (Planned)
With construction expected to begin by the end of 2010, the Westgate Nature Park will provide Leland with its first major park on nearly 150 acres on the south side of Highway 17 behind the Westgate commercial and residential area. Phase I improvements, which will be funded with a $500,000 grant from the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, include 0.3 miles of 10’-wide paved and elevated boardwalk trails for hiking and biking, an outdoor classroom overlooking the wetlands environment, two age-appropriate playgrounds, picnic area, multipurpose field, parking, landscaping, utilities and associated amenities. Once all phases are completed, there will be nearly 5 miles of trails and numerous overlooks and outdoor classrooms taking advantage of Leland's unique coastal wetlands ecosystems. Plans for the park can be viewed below.
