Leland's Little Learners

The Town of Leland seeks to offer a variety of recreation programs for youth and adults that encourage positive leisure lifestyles. Recreation programs provide opportunities for socialization, personal growth, physical activity and character building. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Environmental Programs is always looking to expand the services it provides so that it remains responsive to the community and on the cutting edge of recreation trends. Check back often as new programs are added regularly.

Wednesdays in Nature (Spring 2012)


  • What: The Town of Leland is again partnering with UNCW’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) to offer the popular Wednesdays in Nature series where various experts speak on the nature, beauty and history of the Cape Fear region. This spring’s lineup includes the following:
    • Feb. 22 Introduction to Birds of the Lower Cape Fear Region, James Parnell, PhD, Professor Emeritus UNCW
    • Feb. 29 Protecting Eagles Island, Eagles Island Coalition
    • March 7 Underwater Research with the Underwater Vehicle Program, Glenn Taylor and Lance Horn, UNCW Center for Marine Science
    • March 14 Lake Waccamaw State Park “An Island of Neutrality in a Sea of Acidity,” Lake Waccamaw Ranger
    • March 21 Conserving Biological Diversity in the Southeast Coastal Plain, Dan Ryan, Nature Conservancy
    • March 28 Energy from Algae and other Biofuels, Kimberly Jones, PhD, CEO and Senior Research Scientist for Alganomics LLC
    • April 4 Modern Greece – The Ship that Launched Steam Blockade Running During the Civil War – Mark Wilde-Ramsing PhD, NC Office of State Archaeology
    • April 11 Sea Turtles – Hope Sutton, NC Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve

  • When: TBD; Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Leland’s Little Learners


  • What:  This free program for children ages 3-5 seeks to stimulate the minds of Leland’s children through story time, arts and crafts/activities and time outside on the playground! During the program, parents or guardians must remain with their children. Please contact Amy Ryan at (910) 332-4823 for registration or more information. Space is limited, so be sure to sign up early.
  • Where: Classroom Annex beside Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Dr.
  • When:   Each Tuesday at 9 a.m.
  • Fee: FREE!



Leland Community Garden   

 

  • What : Like to play in the dirt? Love to see the fruits of your hard work come into full bloom, but short on space around your house? Want to work a plot in a supportive environment with other gardeners like you? Then the Leland Community Garden is for you. Plots are now available at the Leland Community Garden, across from Town Hall on the Leland Municipal Campus.
  • Where : Leland Community Garden across from the playground on the municipal campus, 102 Town Hall Drive
  • When : Community work day each Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Expressive Art Group

 

  • What:  Do you love to paint?  Bring whatever you are working on and join others in a supportive environment. All mediums (oils, acrylic, watercolor, pencils) are welcome.  This will be a gathering place to share ideas and learn other techniques.
  • Where: Classroom Annex beside Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Dr.
  • When:  The first and third Thursday of each month from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Scrapbooking Group


  • What:  Have you caught the scrapbooking bug?  Bring your latest scrapbooking project and join others in a fun, supportive environment.
  • Where: Classroom Annex beside Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Dr.
  • When:  The second Saturday of each month all day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Hooks and Needles

 

  • What: Do you love to knit or crochet? Are you looking for a place to get together with others to share your craft? Have you always been interested in the needle arts, but wondered how to get started? Then the Hooks and Needles group is for you. All levels are invited to attend from beginner to advanced. Just bring your current project or materials to start a new one.
  • Where: Classroom Annex beside Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Dr.
  • When:  The second and fourth Friday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon beginning in January.

Leland Hometown Opry (The Sam Miller Jam)

  • What: Ready for some pickin' and grinnin'? The Town of Leland is sponsoring a twice-monthly bluegrass/country/gospel/folk jam session at the Leland Recreation Building. Musicians of all levels of experience are welcome to attend. Spectators are welcome to come sit a spell and enjoy the music.
  • Where: Leland Classroom Annex beside Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Drive
  • When: First and Third Tuesdays of each month at 7 p.m.

Line Dancing Group


  • What: The Town of Leland, in partnership with volunteer leader Carla Jacobs, offers a free line dancing group for residents. Bring your dancing shoes and get ready to meet some new friends and have a great time.
  • Where: Classroom Annex, 102 Town Hall Dr.
  • When: Each Tuesday (Intermediate/Advanced – 10:30 a.m.)
  • Fee: FREE!

Leland Garden Club

  • What: Like to play in the dirt? Love to see the fruits of your hard work come into full bloom? Then the Leland Garden Club is for you. This is an opportunity for all Leland area gardeners to come together to work on projects and learn about gardening.
  • Where: Classroom Annex; 102 Town Hall Dr.
  • When: The fourth Tuesday of each month, 6:30 p.m. (Projects sometimes result in the cancellation of regular meetings, so please call for info)
