TOWN OF LELAND DEVELOPMENT SERVICES:  Taking applications for a student intern

TOWN OF LELAND DEVELOPMENT SERVICES:  Taking applications for a student intern to conduct research, assist in preparing various studies and reports, and aid in the administration of ongoing planning projects.  Specific areas of involvement include assisting in the preparation of non-conforming use inventory throughout the Town and prepare a system to track all non-conforming uses.  The position will last for a minimum of 10 weeks with a maximum duration of 24 weeks.  Applicants should be graduate students or undergraduate students within one year of graduation from a four-year college or university, and be enrolled in related field of study.  Students should also have excellent oral and written communication skills, be able to effectively interact with officials, community groups and the general public, have some knowledge of GIS and other basic computer programs, and have a valid operator's license.  Students should apply by submitting a resume no later than May 21, 2010 to the contact information below. This is a non-funded internship.

Leland, The Gateway to Brunswick County has partnered with Opterex to provide a Gateway to Technology for residents and the local business community as well as for mission critical town infrastructure and public safety needs through the official launch of the LelandCONNECT Encrypted Wireless dome.

LelandCONNECT provides a robust and intuitive wireless network in a secure and encrypted environment enabling streaming data access to existing Town services as well as support for IP ( Internet Protocol ) based Data, Voice and Video services throughout the Town limits and surrounding areas.

       The Town of Leland is partnering with the US Census Bureau to raise awareness of the 2010 Census and to help achieve a complete and accurate account of the growing and ever changing population. The partnership is a part of the larger effort by the Census Bureau to increase participation in the 2010 Census.

     Census data directly affects how more than $400 billion per year in Federal funding is distributed to state, local and tribal governments. It is also used to distribute congressional seats to states. Census data is used to for legislative and congressional redistricting, as well as to determine funding and locations for schools, housing, child care centers, shopping centers, roads and more. These improvements can have a significant impact on the lives of everyone in the community.

Press Release - Sewer Spill - Nov. 14 2009

House Bill 1160, which the General Assembly enacted in July 1999, requires those municipalities, animal operations, industries and others who operate waste handling systems issue news releases when a waste spill of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.

In accordance with that regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to the media in the affected county (ies):

The Town of Leland had a wastewater spill on November 14, 2009 of 112,000 gallons of untreated wastewater that spilled into nearby storm drains which drain into Sturgeon Creek.

Effective August 5th 2009, the Town of Leland Yard Debris Drop-off Site will be located at the New Public Works Complex at 187 Old Lanvale Rd. There will be a sign directing you into the driveway. The site will still operate as always. It will be open every Wednesday from 9am to 4pm except holidays.Click here for more information
