The Town of Leland is seeking an individual to assist in the management of its livability initiatives. This person will be an integral part of the Town of Leland management team and will report directly to the Town Manager. The position is responsible for assisting the Town Manager and the town departments with development and implementation programs, projects, and activities that comprise its strategy to make Leland “…the most … livable community in the Cape Fear region. Examples include the open space and parks plan, recreation programs and activities, and the bicycle plan.
The Town seeks a person who is creative, has excellent analytical and writing skills, and can perform in a team environment. The person must have general knowledge of municipal programs and the ability to work with official boards, community groups, and citizens.
The position requires a 4-year degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant area such as parks and recreation, environmental science, or planning. A masters’ degree is helpful.
The pay range for the position is $32,500 to $49,600.

Qualifications: Prefer coursework or undergraduate degree in Planning or any combination of education and experience that demonstrates significant knowledge of general office procedures, planning and governmental processes. Must have a valid Driver’s license.
Responsibilities: The intern: - Provides information to the public regarding land use plans, zoning and current projects, at the front counter and/or by e-mail and telephone. Reads and interprets site plans, maps, planning and zoning regulations and other planning documents while assisting professional planners and responding to general inquiries. - Assists in the preparation of statistical data as needed. - Prepares correspondence, reports, charts, diagrams, GIS projects and other special projects as needed. - Processes minor planning and zoning applications and assists in the review of compliance permits. - Operates office equipment and software applications and assists in the management of interdepartmental finances. - Acts as clerk to the Planning Board and assists in preparations for various department meetings. - Performs other related duties as required. Other information: This is a temporary full time internship position within the professional planning job classification series that may eventually become a full time position. Work is performed independently with established policies and procedures. Work is governed by broad instructions, objectives and policies. Work requires exercise of considerable initiative and independent analytical, evaluative judgment. Work requires the ability to concentrate on fine details and complete tasks efficiently despite regular interruptions, some pressure and changing priorities. Work requires the ability to explain technical requirements in simplified terms. Work is reviewed, in progress and upon completion, for conformity with standards, quality and accuracy of work performed.
