Leland Parks and Recreation November 2011 Update

Leland’s Little Learners has Spots Remaining
We still have room for a few more “little learners” to participate in our free weekly preschool reading program! See below for more information.

Leland Art Group
Did you know Leland has its own group of dedicated artists who gather twice a month to work on their projects in a supportive environment? Check out the Expressive Art Group at the meetings on the first and third Thursday of each month. See below for more details. 

Upcoming Programs and Events:

Leland’s Little Learners 
* What:  This free program for children ages 3-5 seeks to stimulate the minds of Leland’s children through story time, arts and crafts/activities and time outside on the playground! During the program, parents or guardians must remain with their children. Please contact Amy Ryan at (910) 332-4823 for registration or more information. Space is limited, so be sure to sign up early.
* Where: Classroom Annex beside Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Dr.
* When:  Each Tuesday at 9 a.m.
* Fee: FREE!

Wednesdays in Nature (Fall 2011)
* What: The Town of Leland is again partnering with UNCW’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) to offer the popular Wednesdays in Nature series where various experts speak on the nature, beauty and history of the Cape Fear region. This fall’s lineup includes the following:
o October 12 - Backyard Biodiversity and Permaculture Design: Matt Collogan, Environmental Education Program Director, Airlie Gardens
o October 19 - Oysters! Martin H. Posey, Ph.D., Biology and Marine Biology
o October 26 - Stormwater 101: Dru Harrison, Interim Director, New Hanover Soil & Water Conservation District
o November 2 - Native Plants for your Landscape: Lara Berkley, B & O Designs
o November 9 - Shipwrecks of the Cape Fear Region, Mark Wilde-Ramsing, Ph.D., Deputy State Archaeologist
* Where: Leland Classroom Annex (102 Town Hall Dr.; Travel through Town Hall parking lot. Building will be straight ahead. Park in gravel lot on the right).
* When: September 21-November 9; Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
* Fee: $40 for OLLI members, $70 for nonmembers. To register call 910-962-3195 or visit

Leland Community Garden 
* What: The Town of Leland Community Garden has several plots available for Fall/Winter gardens. The garden provides a supportive environment where local gardeners can exchange ideas and knowhow while having fun at the same time with their neighbors. Individual plots are available in the following sizes: 10’x20’, 10’x10’ and 4’x10’. Participants may also chose to garden the community plot where all produce will be donated to the Manna Ministries food bank. There is no charge for the plots and water is provided on site. The Town is now accepting applications and plots will be assigned on a first-come, first served basis. If you are interested, please stop by the Leland Parks and Recreation office to pick up an application.
* Where: Leland Community Garden. Across the street from the playground on the municipal campus, 102 Town Hall Drive 
* When: Community work day each Friday at 3:30 p.m.
* Fee: Plots are FREE and water is provided on site! Please contact Leland Parks and Recreation at 910-332-4823 for more information. 

Hooks and Needles
* What: Do you love to knit or crochet? Are you looking for a place to get together with others to share your craft? Have you always been interested in the needle arts, but wondered how to get started? Then the Hooks and Needles group is for you. All levels are invited to attend from beginner to advanced. Just bring your current project or materials to start a new one.
* Where: Classroom Annex beside Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Dr.
* When:  The second and fourth Friday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon.

Expressive Art Group
* What:  Do you love to paint and create?  Bring whatever you are working on and join others in a supportive environment. All mediums (oils, acrylic, watercolor, pencils) are welcome. This will be a gathering place to share ideas and learn other techniques. Please bring your own materials.
* Where: Classroom Annex beside Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Dr. 
*  When:  The first and third Thursday of each month from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Leland Hometown Opry 
* What: Ready for some pickin’ and grinnin’? The Town of Leland is sponsoring a twice-monthly bluegrass/country/gospel/folk jam session at the Leland Recreation Building. Musicians of all levels of experience are welcome to attend. Spectators are encouraged to come sit a spell and enjoy the music.
* Where: Classroom Annex beside Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Dr. 
* When: First and Third Tuesdays of each month at 7 p.m.

Intermediate/Advanced Line Dancing Group
* What: The Town of Leland offers a free line dancing group for residents. Bring your dancing shoes and get ready to meet some new friends and have a great time.
* Where: Classroom Annex beside Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Dr.
* When: Each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.

Leland Garden Club 
* What: Like to play in the dirt? Love to see the fruits of your hard work come into full bloom? Then the Leland Garden Club is for you. This is an opportunity for all of Leland’s gardeners to come together to learn more and work on a variety of beautification projects. 
* Where: Classroom Annex beside Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Dr.
* When: Fourth Tuesday of the month; 6:30 p.m.
