Leland Parks and Recreation June 2012 Update


If the past few weeks of weather are indication, it looks like we are in for a wild summer! We kick it off right this month with some exciting events and new fitness programs. Congratulations to our Leland's Little Learners Graduates!
We had 10 graduates of our Leland's Little Learners program who will all be going on to kindergarten this year!



Concerts on the Coast
Dust off your dancing shoes and get ready to party with our great Concerts on the Coast series, which kicks off at the end of this month. See below for more details.

Leland Now Offering Fitness Classes/Groups
This month we introduce several new opportunities for you to get fit through our Boot Camp, Fit Over 50 and Arthritis Exercise Group. See below for more information on these exciting offerings.

Olympic Day
In honor of the upcoming London Olympics, we have a fun day of Olympic activities planned for June 23. Bring the family out for a host of games and events and stay for our Movie in the Park where we will show the inspiring film Soul Surfer. See below for details.

Town to Offer CPR Classes
Beginning in July, the Town of Leland will offer CPR Classes in coordination with Leland Fire and Rescue. See below for information on these classes.

Leland Market
The Leland Market has been suspended indefinitely. Thank you to those of you who supported the market over the past few years. The vendors truly appreciate their loyal customers and hope that you will visit them at the other area markets.

Happy Little Singers 
We have suspended our Happy Little Singers program until further notice. We hope to be able to reinstitute the program in the future. Thanks for your patience.

New Programs and Upcoming Events:


Boot Camp
* What: Rev up your metabolism with a challenging full body workout combining cardio bursts, athletic drills and strength training exercises.  This class will utilize the outdoor park when weather permits. Modifications will be offered for all fitness levels. Please bring water, an exercise mat and a towel.
* Where: Leland Municipal Park (102 Town Hall Drive)
* When: Each Monday and Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
* Fee: $40 for the month or $8 for a drop-in class. Call 910-332-4823 to register.

Fit Over 50
* What: We combine fun and fitness in this class by increasing your cardiovascular level with low impact aerobic choreography and build muscular endurance with resistance training.  This class will utilize light hand weights, resistance bands and exercise balls. It is designed for all fitness levels and is especially beneficial for those over 50.  Be sure to bring water, an exercise mat and a towel. 
* Where: Leland Classroom Annex (102 Town Hall Drive)
* When: Each Tuesday and Thursday at 8:00 a.m.
* Fee: $40 for the month or $8 for a drop-in class. Call 910-332-4823 to register

Arthritis Exercise Group
* What: Volunteer teacher Edna Roy leads the group through a series of chair-aided group exercises designed to help the joints and muscles of people struggling with arthritis or other joint and muscle issues. This low-impact group is great for seniors.
* Where: Leland Classroom Annex (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.
* Fee: FREE! Call 910-332-4823 for more information.

June 23 – Olympic Day
* What:  Olympic Day is a day for commemorating the birth of the modern Olympic Games. Olympic Day is not only a celebration, but an international effort to promote fitness and well-being in addition to Olympic ideals of Fair Play, Perseverance, Respect and Sportsmanship.  This event will be fun for the whole family featuring different games from the Summer Olympics. Following this event will show the inspirational movie Soul Surfer.  
* Where: Leland Municipal Complex Park (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When:  Saturday, June 23, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Movie in the Park to follow at dusk)
* Fee:  FREE!

CPR Classes
* What: The Town of Leland is partnering with Leland Fire and Rescue to offer CPR classes.
* When and Where: 
   o Leland Fire and Rescue (1004 Village Rd.) – Second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. beginning July 9
   o Leland Classroom Annex (102 Town Hall Dr.) – Third Thursday of each month at 9 a.m. beginning July 19
* Fee: FREE! Manual can be purchased in advance of class. Space is limited. Call 910-332-4818 for more information.

Movies in the Park
* What: This year’s family movie series promises to be a summertime hit. Come watch a film under the stars in the Leland Municipal Park, just like in the good old days of drive in movies. Bring your blanket and lawn chairs. No pets please.

   o April 28 – Happy Feet 2 (Family Fun Day)
   o May 12 – Puss in Boots
   o May 26 – The Smurfs
   o June 9 – The Muppets
   o June 23 – Soul Surfer (Olympic Day)
   o July 7 – The Adventures of TinTin

* Where: Leland Municipal Complex Park (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When:  See above. Every other Saturday. 
* Fee: FREE! Concessions will be available for purchase.

Concerts on the Coast
* What: Back for its fourth year, this free outdoor concert series promises brings some of the Southeast’s best beach and party bands playing our own backyard! Bring your lawn chairs, picnic baskets and dancin’ shoes. Just as a friendly reminder, alcohol is not permitted on Town property. This series is brought to you with help from Brunswick County Parks and Rec.

   o June 28 – The Imitations (Wilmington’s Favorite Party Band)
   o July 12 – Coco Loco (Myrtle Beach Party Band)
   o July 26 – The Main Event Band (2011 Series Favorite Returns)
   o August 9 – Sea Cruz (Award-winning Beach Band)

* Where: Leland Municipal Complex Park (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When:  See above. Concerts from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
* Fee: FREE!
