Leland Parks and Recreation February 2014 Update



Don’t you just love this winter weather! We invite you to come fall in love with our community programs and special events. We have plenty of programs including fitness classes, children’s programs and more. Announcements:

Whistle Pig 5k is Here!
Trade in those snow boots for running shoes this Saturday as temperatures climb back to the 60s. Come run in the area's premier Groundhog Day event – the Whistle Pig 5k race and one mile fun run. See below for details.

Youth Art Day Returns this Month!
The Town of Leland will host its fourth annual Youth Art Day on Saturday, February 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Leland Recreation Building (102 Town Hall Drive). See below for more information.

Bark in the Park Returns, Seeks Vendors
Mark your calendars now for our annual Bark in the Park on March 8. The event will feature a rabies clinic, contests, demonstrations and more. If you have a pet-centric business in the area, don’t miss this great opportunity to meet hundreds of dog owners by signing up as a vendor. For more information, see below.

New Day for Little Learners
Leland’s Little Learners, our preschool reading program, is moving to Wednesday mornings! We are busy making crafts and reading books each week at 9:30am. We still have a few spots available! See below for more details.

Yoga Classes Coming Soon
We will soon release information on a new Yoga Class. Be on the lookout for a separate e-mail or call us at 910-332-4823 for more information.

Upcoming Programs and Events:

Whistle Pig 5K
* What:  Keep your New Year's resolution by running in the Whistle Pig 5k. This race is a great opportunity to get your run in and check out the new Westgate Nature Park. Help us bring an end to winter by enjoying the park, the competition and the fun of our area's premier Groundhog Day event. Be sure to wear your best groundhog-inspired costume (overalls/coveralls encouraged). You may even see your shadow!
* Where:  Westgate Nature Park (1260 Westgate Drive)
* When:  Saturday, February 1, race at 9 a.m.
* Fee:  5k - $30; 1 mile - $20. Participant Beanies for those who register! For more detailed information click here for the Whistle Pig.

Youth Art Day
* What: Youth Art Day is a time for local youth to come out and experience the many aspects of art from visual art to music. DREAMS of Wilmington will provide several hands-on stations where youth will be able to create visual art projects including pottery and crafts and participate in African Drumming. Kids will also have the opportunity to learn about and participate in the art of woodturning with instruction by the Wilmington Area Woodturners Association. Crews from Home Depot will be on hand helping with special crafts. Leland Parks and Recreation will provide hot dogs and drinks for children. Art activities are geared for youth ages 8 and up, but all are welcome to attend. This event is offered free of charge thanks to support from the Brunswick Arts Council and the North Carolina Arts Council.
* Where: Leland Municipal Park and Recreation Building (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: February 15, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
* Fee: FREE!

A Bark in the Park
* What: A Bark in the Park is an event centered on people and their dogs!  This event will include a free rabies clinic presented by Capeside Animal Hospital and Furever Friends Animal Rescue, contests (Best Trick at 11 a.m. and Owner Look-a-like at 12 p.m.) and prizes, demonstrations and more from pet businesses in Leland and surrounding areas.  Come out and enjoy a day in the park with your best friend!
* Where: Leland Municipal Park (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: March 8; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
* Fee: FREE!

Leland’s Little Learners
* What: This free program for children ages 3-5 seeks to stimulate the minds of Leland's children through story time, arts and crafts and time outside on the playground! During the program, parents or guardians must remain with their children. Space is limited, so sign up early.
* Where: Leland Classroom Annex (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: Wednesday Mornings at 9:30 a.m.
* Fee: FREE!

Total Body Conditioning I
* What: Rev up your metabolism with a challenging full-body workout combining cardio and strength training exercises using body weight, hand weights and elastic bands. There will be a big emphasis on core, balance and flexibility. This class is designed with low impact moves perfect for the beginner or novice or those needing modifications. Please bring water, an exercise mat, and a towel (‘cause you’re gonna sweat!).
* Where: Leland Municipal Park and Recreation Building (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: Monday and Wednesday Nights; 5:30 p.m. – 6:20 p.m. (New 8 weeks starts January 13)
* Fee: $95 for 8 weeks. That’s under $6 a class! Call (910) 332-4823 for more information or to register.

Total Body Conditioning II
* What: This bootcamp style class in the park will challenge and test your fitness level. Cardio bursts, athletic drills, and strength training exercises will test your athletic prowess and help you achieve your fitness goals which you will be setting at the beginning of the session and tracking throughout. Please bring a can-do attitude, water, an exercise mat, and a towel.
* Where: Leland Municipal Park and Recreation Building (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: Monday and Wednesday Nights; 6:30 p.m. – 7:20 p.m. (New 8 weeks starts January 13)
* Fee: $95 for 8 weeks. That’s under $6 a class! Call (910) 332-4823 for more information or to register.

February 22 - “A Perfect Knight”
Boiling Springs Lakes Second Annual Mother/Son Date Night – An event for boys in grades k-5 and their adult companion (mothers, aunts, grandmothers, cousins).
