Leland Parks and Recreation May 2014 Update


May is here and that can only mean one thing… IT’S MOVIE AND CONCERT TIME! We also have plenty of programs including yoga, fitness classes, children’s programs and more for you to enjoy. A Special Thank You!
This year’s egg hunt was our biggest and best one yet, even in the pouring rain. Thanks to all who braved the rain and joined us for this special event. A huge thank you goes to Crosswinds Church, First Baptist of Leland, River of Leland and Reach Community Church for all the amazing prizes, North Brunswick Lions Club for volunteering and Leland Piggly Wiggly for providing the snacks. We could not have done it without you!

Good, Old-Fashioned Family Fun
This year’s Movies in the Park series kicked off on May 3 with Monsters U. See below for the rest of the lineup or visit our website.

Grab Your Dancing Shoes
Concerts on the Coast return this month! The Imitations will kick off our concert series on May 29! See below for more details and list of upcoming concerts.

Brunswick Waterfest
The big event on water is back for its second year! This event features standup paddleboard (SUP) races, guided kayak and SUP tours, SUP yoga, children’s activities, Reel Paddling Film Festival, bird counting and an outdoor movie at the USS North Carolina Battleship. Click here or see below for more information.

Are you feeling stressed and worn out from the hustle and bustle of everyday life? Come join us for a relaxing yoga session and say goodbye to all those worries. See below for more information on our classes.

Movies in the Park
* What: Our annual Movies in the Park series returns for another great year. Join us in the park and watch a family movie under the stars. Bring a blanket, your lawnchairs, your picnic and your family, but please no pets or open containers. Smoking is also prohibited on Town property. This year's lineup includes:

May 3 - Monsters University
May 17 - Despicable Me 2
June 7 - Surf's Up (At Brunswick Waterfest, 1 Battleship Dr., Wilmington)
June 14 - Smurfs 2
June 28 -The Nut Job
July 12 - Frozen

* Where: Leland Municipal Park (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: Every other Saturday Night at Dusk. (Usually around 8:30pm)
* Fee: FREE!!! Concessions will be available for purchase.

Concerts on the Coast
* What: Our annual Concerts on the Coast series returns for another great year. Join us at the Leland Municipal Park and be prepared to dance. Bring a blanket, a picnic, your lawnchairs and your family, but please no pets, open containers or smoking. This year's lineup includes:

May 29 - The Imitations (Beach)
June 12 - Lloyd Dobler Effect (Variety)
June 26 - Jim Quick and Coastline (Beach and Soul)
July 10 - Coco Loco/Most Wanted (Variety and Country)

* Where: Leland Municipal Park Stage (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: Every other Thursday night from 6:30pm until 8pm.
* Fee: FREE!!! Trolley Stop will be on site to provide concessions for purchase.

Wild Bird Walks
* What: Join the experts from Wild Bird and Garden on a guided bird watching walk in one of the area’s best natural environments. This is a great opportunity to get out in nature and learn about the different species of birds in our area. All you need to bring is a water bottle, binoculars and bug spray!
* Where: Ev-Henwood Nature Preserve (6150 Rock Creek Rd., Leland, NC 28451)
* When: Thursday, May 8; 8- 9:30 a.m.

Brunswick Waterfest
* What: The 2nd annual Brunswick WaterFest, presented by the Leland Tourism Development Authority with assistance from the Town of Leland, USS North Carolina Battleship and Brunswick County, will highlight the natural beauty of the northern Brunswick County area. This event will showcase the area’s natural resources and feature guided outdoor activities, educational programs and a day-long, family-oriented festival.
* Where: USS North Carolina Battleship Park (1 Battleship Rd. NE, Wilmington, NC 28401)
* When: Saturday, June 7 (Main festival starts at 2 pm)
* Fee: Visit for information.

Beginners Yoga
* What: This class is an introduction to the fundamental postures of yoga as well as breath work and relaxation. We will take a slower pace to this practice and help you to find proper alignment in the postures. Everybody is welcome!
* Where: Leland Classroom Annex (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When:  Monday nights from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
* Fee: $120 yoga punch card (10 classes plus one free class!) Drop-in fee is $15. Space is limited so call early to reserve your spot (910) 332-4823.

Gentle Yoga
* What: Join certified yoga instructor Jessica Burkett in helping you find more freedom and openness in your body so you can move through life with ease and strength at any age. This is a Hatha/Vinyasa led yoga class.
* Where: Leland Classroom Annex (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: Wednesday Mornings from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
* Fee: $120 yoga punch card (10 classes plus one free class!) Drop-in fee is $15. Space is limited so call early to reserve your spot (910) 332-4823.

Leland’s Little Learners
* What: This free program for children ages 3-5 seeks to stimulate the minds of Leland's children through story time, arts and crafts and time outside on the playground! During the program, parents or guardians must remain with their children. Space is limited, so sign up early.
* Where: Leland Classroom Annex (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: Wednesday Mornings at 9:30 a.m.
* Fee: FREE!

Ongoing Programs:

Our ongoing recreation programs include: Leland's Little Learners, Total Body Conditioning, Scrapbooking, Line Dancing, Common Threads and Expressive Art. For more information on these programs, please click here.
