Leland Parks and Recreation June 2014 Update


Summertime is just around the corner! When you’re planning your family fun make sure to check out our family friendly events! We also have plenty of programs including yoga, fitness classes, children’s programs and more for you to enjoy. Kayak/Paddleboard Tour Opportunities Abound at Waterfest Saturday!
Brunswick Waterfest is back for its second year! This event features standup paddleboard (SUP) races, guided kayak and SUP tours, SUP yoga, children’s activities, the Reel Paddling Film Festival, bird counting and an outdoor movie at the USS North Carolina Battleship Park. Kayaking Adventures Await
Join us for a great time on the water as we explore Leland’s Sturgeon and Mill creeks by kayak. The Town has partnered with Mahanaim Adventures to offer three trips this summer in June, July and August. See below for more details on registration.

Healing Yoga for Cancer Workshop
This one day yoga workshop helps put you on the road to healing from living with cancer. See below for more information.

Yoga Classes

Movies and Concerts Continue
Washington DC band Lloyd Dobler Effect will be here June 12 to get you up out of your seats and dancing around! The next movie (Surf’s Up) will be June 7 at Battleship Park as part of Brunswick Waterfest. See below for more details.

Get in Shape for the Summer
Summer is just around the corner which makes now the best time to get into shape! Come join Alan Murphy at his Total Body Conditioning Classes in Leland Municipal Park and Recreation Building. New 8-weeks starts on June 9!

Upcoming Programs and Events:


Brunswick Waterfest
* What: The 2nd annual Brunswick WaterFest, presented by the Leland Tourism Development Authority with assistance from the Town of Leland, USS North Carolina Battleship and Brunswick County, will highlight the natural beauty of the northern Brunswick County area. This event will showcase the area’s natural resources and feature standup paddleboard races, guided outdoor activities, educational programs and a day-long, family-oriented festival that will end with a Movie in the Park.
* Where: USS North Carolina Battleship Park (1 Battleship Rd. NE, Wilmington, NC 28401)
* When: Saturday, June 7 (Main festival starts at 2 pm)
* Fee: Visit www.brunswickwaterfest.com for information.

Healing Yoga for Cancer
* What: Join Jessica Burkett CTYT, 300hr CYT, for a gentle yoga class that helps aid in the road to healing from living with cancer. This class will consist of a healing flow of gentle movements and breathing exercises that will support the immune system and help reduce pain, increase energy, build strength and reconnect you to your body! Open to any level of student. Please bring a yoga mat, blanket and pillow.
* Where: Leland Classroom Annex (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: Saturday, June 21; 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Movies in the Park
* What: Join us in the park and watch a family movie under the stars. Bring a blanket, your lawnchairs, your picnic and your family, but please no pets or open containers. Smoking is also prohibited on Town property. This year's lineup includes:

     June 7 - Surf's Up (At Brunswick Waterfest, 1 Battleship Dr., Wilmington)
     June 14 - Smurfs 2
     June 28 -The Nut Job
     July 12 - Frozen

* Where: Leland Municipal Park (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: Every other Saturday Night at Dusk. (Usually around 8:30 pm)
* Fee: FREE!!! Concessions will be available for purchase.

Concerts on the Coast
* What: Our annual Concerts on the Coast series returns for another great year. Join us at the Leland Municipal Park and be prepared to dance. Bring a blanket, a picnic, your lawn chairs and your family, but please no pets, open containers or smoking. This year's lineup includes:

     June 12 - Lloyd Dobler Effect (Variety)
     June 26 - Jim Quick and Coastline (Beach and Soul)
     July 10 - Coco Loco/Most Wanted (Variety and Country)

* Where: Leland Municipal Park Stage (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: Every other Thursday night from 6:30 pm until 8 pm.
* Fee: FREE!!! Trolly Stop will be on site to provide concessions for purchase.

Kayak Adventures
* What: Explore the natural beauty of Sturgeon and Mill creeks by kayak with this leisurely 4-mile guided paddle led by Mahanaim Adventures. You will have the opportunity to view up close the amazing wildlife of the local tidal creek environment under the watchful eye of your guide. This trip is great for beginners and those looking for an introduction to kayaking. Equipment and boats will be provided. All you need to bring is a water bottle, sun screen and bug spray.
* Where: Sturgeon Creek Park (844 Appleton Way, Leland – From Village Rd., RT on Graham Dr., RT on Appleton Way – both are dirt roads)
* When: Sundays 8:30 a.m. June 8, July 20, August 17. Tours take approximately three (3) hours.

Wild Bird Walks
* What: Join the experts from Wild Bird and Garden on a guided bird watching walk in one of the area’s best natural environments. This is a great opportunity to get out in nature and learn about the different species of birds in our area. All you need to bring is a water bottle, binoculars and bug spray!
* Where: Brunswick Town and Orton Pond (Meet at Orton Pond)
* When: Thursday, June 12; 8- 9:30 a.m.

Beginners Yoga
* What: This class is an introduction to the fundamental postures of yoga as well as breath work and relaxation. We will take a slower pace to this practice and help you to find proper alignment in the postures. Everybody is welcome!
* Where: Leland Classroom Annex (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When:  Monday nights from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
* Fee: $120 yoga punch card (10 classes plus one free class!) Drop-in fee is $15. Space is limited so call early to reserve your spot (910) 332-4823.

Gentle Yoga
* What: Join certified yoga instructor Jessica Burkett in helping you find more freedom and openness in your body so you can move through life with ease and strength at any age. This is a Hatha/Vinyasa led yoga class.
* Where: Leland Classroom Annex (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: Wednesday Mornings from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
* Fee: $120 yoga punch card (10 classes plus one free class!) Drop-in fee is $15. Space is limited so call early to reserve your spot (910) 332-4823.

Total Body Conditioning I
* What: Rev up your metabolism with a challenging full-body workout combining cardio and strength training exercises using body weight, hand weights and elastic bands. There will be a big emphasis on core, balance and flexibility. This class is designed with low impact moves perfect for the beginner or novice or those needing modifications. Please bring water, an exercise mat, and a towel (‘cause you’re gonna sweat!).
* Where: Leland Municipal Park and Recreation Building (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: Monday and Wednesday Nights; 5:30 p.m. – 6:20 p.m. *New 8 weeks start June 9!*
* Fee: $115 for 8 weeks. Call (910) 332-4823 for more information or to register.

Total Body Conditioning II
* What: This bootcamp style class in the park will challenge and test your fitness level. Cardio bursts, athletic drills, and strength training exercises will test your athletic prowess and help you achieve your fitness goals which you will be setting at the beginning of the session and tracking throughout. Please bring a can-do attitude, water, an exercise mat and a towel.
* Where: Leland Municipal Park and Recreation Building (102 Town Hall Dr.)
* When: Monday and Wednesday Nights; 6:30 p.m. – 7:20 p.m. *New 8 weeks start June 9!*
* Fee: $115 for 8 weeks. Call (910) 332-4823 for more information or to register.
