Citizens' Police Academy

The Leland Police Department is now accepting applications for its Fall 2008 Citizens Police Academy.  This program is being launched to increase community awareness of the Police Department’s operations and create greater mutual understanding between citizens and police officers.  In addition, this program seeks to establish and strengthen a positive working relationship between the community and the Police Department.

The concept of a Citizen Academy started in England in 1977.  The first such course in the United States was at the Orlando, Florida, Police Department in 1985.

Participants will be provided with information about a variety of police functions, as outlined in the course syllabus.

The Program will take place on Wednesdays starting Sept. 17, and graduation be held at the Leland Town Council meeting on Nov. 20.

Only 15 applicants will be selected for participation in the Leland Police Department Citizens’ Police Academy.  If you are interested in participating, please complete and return the application form.  All applicants will be required to undergo a thorough background check to ascertain suitability for admission to this program.

Please contact Corporal Robert Ernest at 910-371-1100 or send an e-mail to rernest@townofleland.com for more information.
