Town of Leland hosting Bicycle Fest on Saturday, June 30

June 21, 2007

LELAND, NC – The Town of Leland and Cape Fear Cyclists are hosting a Bicycle Fest on June 30th from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Leland Middle School.  This free event will feature raffle prizes, free drinks and a bike ride throughout the Leland area.

“Our upcoming Bicycle Fest is intended to be a fun, informative event that educates Leland-area bicycle enthusiasts on our town’s bicycle system, connectivity and route conditions,” says Landon Barker, who oversees the Town of Leland’s Parks & Recreation Department.  “In addition, we hope those who attend will provide input to help us improve and strengthen our entire Parks and Recreation program.”

One of the event’s highlights will be the “LA Cruise”, a planned bike route through the Leland area utilizing existing corridors and routes.  This portion of the event will enable the town to evaluate potential on-road and off-road bicycling improvements, system connectivity, barriers and constraints and roadway conditions.  The Bike Fest will also include bicycle safety information, bicycle safety tips for kids, helmet fittings, bicycle tune-ups and a bike rodeo. The rodeo is a bicycle skills event that provides an opportunity for bicyclists to practice and develop skills to help them to become better bicyclists and avoid typical accidents.

Wal-Mart of Leland, Piggly Wiggly of Leland, Port City Java and McDonalds are providing free drinks on the day of the event and other vendors will be selling food throughout the day.  Radio station Z 107.5 will be on site with free stickers and t-shirts, and Coastal Bicycles of Shallotte, Bike Cycles of Wilmington, Wheel Fun Rentals of Carolina Beach and Suburban Bicycles of Oak Island will be on hand as well.  There will also be a raffle drawing with prizes ranging from free youth bicycles to water bottles and bike tune-ups.
