Town of Leland hosting community blood drive

February 6, 2008

LELAND, N.C. - The Town of Leland is hosting a community blood drive on Tuesday, Feb. 26 from 11:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at Leland Town Hall.  Citizens are urged to come out and donate blood.  All blood types are needed, and on average it only takes about 10 minutes to give blood.  Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are recommended to reduce wait time.

“Every unit of blood that is donated can help up to three different people,” says Alycia Mintz, human resources assistant and coordinator of the Health and Wellness Program for the Town of Leland.  “The Town of Leland is hosting this blood drive to give our citizens an opportunity to help save a life by giving blood right here in their own community.”

All donors will be entered in a grand prize drawing to win $1,200 in free flowers from Carithers Flowers.  Donors are reminded to drink plenty of fluids and eat a good meal before giving blood.  To make an appointment to give blood, call (910) 332-4648.  Call 1-866-562-7156 for information about eligibility.

The American Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Last year, almost a million volunteers and 35,000 employees helped victims of almost 75,000 disasters; taught lifesaving skills to millions; and helped U.S. service members separated from their families stay connected. Almost 4 million people gave blood through the Red Cross, the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. The American Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work.  For more information, please visit www.redcross.org.
