Big Businesses Coming to Leland It's ranked in the top five for growth in North Carolina. In fact, one report says 19 people a day are moving into Brunswick County. So it should come as no surprise that developers and businesses are popping up in some of the hotter spots, like Leland. Right now, construction on Highway 17 in Leland is practically non-stop. "We get excited every time we see a sign, and just being able to shop out here ... and it makes it more of a community feel," said Sallie Bohn. Bohn works at the Spotted Toad, a small gift shop that just opened in the Waterford Shopping Center. The owner chose this spot because of the rapid growth of the area. "She drove by here and saw the structures coming up and thought this would be a good area to open a place like this, and I think she's right." Since moving to Magnolia Greens four years ago, Bohn's also seen the growth first hand. "There were maybe 50 lots here when we bought our lot." So where is this big construction boom coming from? According to Leland Planning Director Cameron Moore, it's cheaper to buy land and live here in Leland. Another advantage, the town spent millions improving the sewer system. "When you have water and sewer, obviously you can have growth, without that, it's real hard to put things on the ground, that's another reason why I think we're having a big influx." Now, with a Port City Java and an Eckerds here, and a Wal-Mart on the way, others are anxious to see what could be next. "As far as Target, maybe a Petsmart, Costco, Harris Teeter, or possibly a Lowe's." Pair that up with hundreds of residents moving into Leland every year, and you've got a small town with a big future.
