Town of Leland Adopts Ordinance Governing Campaign Signs September 27, 2007 LELAND, N.C. – The Town of Leland adopted an ordinance governing the posting of political campaign signs at its Sept. 20, 2007 meeting. Ordinance #07-24 amends chapter 30 of the town’s code of ordinances. The text of the amendment is below. The Town Council of the Town of Leland, North Carolina, doth ordain: 1. That ARTICLE XI Sec. 30-390(10)of the Code of Ordinances be amended by deleting the following: (10) Political signs. Such signs shall not be illuminated, shall not be located within a public street right-of-way or closer than ten feet from the edge of the street pavement or within a required sight triangle, shall not be attached to trees or utility poles, and shall be no taller than four feet. Political signs may be displayed during a period beginning 30 days prior to an election and concluding 48 hours after the election. In the event of a runoff election, political signs for candidates involved may remain on display until 48 hours after the runoff election. All portable and roof mounted signs for political advertisement are prohibited. All signs that violate the provisions of this subsection and/or political signs that remain more than 48 hours after the election shall be removed for disposal by the town. The maximum size of such signs is six square feet. and adding 30-390(10) to read as follows: (10) Political signs. Such signs shall not be illuminated, shall not be located within a public street right-of-way or closer than ten feet from the edge of the street pavement or within a required sight triangle, shall not be attached to trees or utility poles, shall not be roof mounted, shall be no taller than four feet, and shall have a maximum size of six square feet, provided that either side of a 2 sided sign may be up to six square feet. 2. If this ordinance or the application thereof to any person or circumstance is held invalid, such invalidity shall not affect other provisions or applications of the ordinance which can be given separate effect and to that end the provisions of this ordinance are declared to be severable. 3. Any ordinance or any part of the ordinance in conflict with this ordinance, to the extent of such conflict, is hereby repealed. 4. This ordinance is adopted in the interest of public health, safety and general welfare of the inhabitants of the Town of Leland, North Carolina, and shall be in full force and effect from and after its adoption.
