LELAND, N.C. -- The Leland Police Department announced today that it is accepting applications for its Fall 2008 Citizens’ Police Academy.  The department held its first citizen academy earlier this year.

 

The academy, which will be held on Wednesdays beginning Sept. 17, will provide participants with a greater understanding of the police department’s operations and the functions of different divisions within the department.  Graduation will be held at the Leland Town Council meeting on Nov. 20.

 

 “We believe our Citizens’ Police Academy will create a greater sense of mutual understanding between our citizens and our Police Department,” says Corporal Robert Ernest of the Leland Police Department.  “This program is part of our department’s renewed focus on developing a stronger working relationship with members of the community.”

 

The concept of a citizen academy started in England in 1977.  The first such course in the United States was at the Orlando, Florida Police Department in 1985. 

 

Fifteen applicants will be selected for participation in the academy.  Citizens who are interested in participating should complete and return the application form, which can be downloaded on the Town of Leland’s Web site (www.townofleland.com).  All applicants will be required to undergo a thorough background check to ascertain suitability for admission to this program.  For more information, please contact Corporal Robert Ernest at 910-371-1100 or send an e-mail to rernest@townofleland.com.
