Leland Police Department’s Second Annual

D.A.R.E. Motorcycle and Car Show set for June 16

June 11, 2007

The Leland Police Department’s second annual D.A.R.E. Motorcycle and Car Show will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Leland Municipal Town Center.  This event benefits the D.A.R.E. program and the Family Support Network of Southeastern North Carolina, Inc., an organization that provides emotional and educational support for parents of children with special needs.

“Last year’s event was a huge success and was instrumental in providing the funds needed to launch a new DARE program at Leland Middle School,” said Corporal Sherry Lewis of the Leland Police Department and initiator of the DARE program at Leland Middle School.  “We hope this year’s event will provide citizens with a fun way to help raise awareness and generate the financial resources needed to continue this invaluable program.”

The day’s activities will include live bands, a Sun Coast Cruiser display, multiple motorcycle and chopper clubs, pony rides and blow-up rides for children.  Food and cold drinks will be for sale and vendors will be selling and displaying various types of merchandise.  Trophies will be awarded and a raffle drawing will be held every 15 minutes after 10:00 a.m. for prizes ranging from automobile cleaning supplies to signed artist paintings.  The mini custom chopper donated by Skip Wiltkofsky for the December raffle drawing will also be on display.  Tickets for the chopper raffle drawing are on sale for $10 each or three for $25 and are available at the Leland Police Department or Skip’s Tire of Leland.

Last year’s event raised over $5,000.  The proceeds were used to provide D.A.R.E. instruction to seventh graders, advanced D.A.R.E instruction to eighth graders, and to purchase student workbooks and graduation materials.

With last year’s launch of its DARE program, the Leland Police Department joined the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Department as one of two law enforcement agencies in Brunswick County with an active D.A.R.E program.   For more information, please call the Leland Police Department at 910-371-1100 or visit www.townofleland.com.
