Town of Leland, N.C. DOT Join Forces for Roadside

Cleanup Drive as Part of Litter Sweep 2007

Volunteers Needed Between September 15 and 29

LELAND – The Town of Leland's Storm Water Management Department is coordinating the Fall 2007 Litter Sweep for the Leland area.  The Fall Litter Sweep is set for September 15-29. 

 

Litter Sweep is a statewide roadside litter cleanup drive sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).  The NCDOT Office of Beautification Programs administers the Litter Sweep program.  For more information, please click here.

 

Volunteers Needed

The town is currently seeking volunteers to help clean up Leland-area roadsides.  Individuals, civic groups, Homeowners' Associations, churches, schools, businesses and other organizations are invited to participate.  The Town's clean-up will be held on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 9:00 a.m.  Those interested in participating should meet at the Leland Town Hall.  For more information or to volunteer, please contact Steven Spruill, Storm Water Manager for the Town of Leland, at 910-371-0148 x201 or sspruill@townofleland.com

 


Additional Details:

  • Litter Sweep is a statewide roadside litter cleanup drive sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). It is a biannual event usually scheduled for the last two weeks of April and September. The NCDOT Office of Beautification Programs administers the Spring and Fall Litter Sweep.

     

  • Governor Easley issues a proclamation prior to each cleanup to encourage North Carolina citizens, businesses, local governments, civic groups and Adopt-A-Highway (AAH) volunteers to participate in making our state clean, green and beautiful.

  • Volunteers can obtain pick up supplies such as orange trash bags, blue bags (for items to be recycled), orange safety vests and gloves from any of the NCDOT's county maintenance offices or by contacting the Town of Leland's Storm Water Management Office.

  • NCDOT maintenance crews devote one week of their time during Litter Sweep to pick up litter and collect orange bags from the roadsides once the groups have completed a cleanup.

  • Everyone's participation in Litter Sweep is needed in order to clean up the increasing amount of roadside litter.
