Governor Easley appoints Leland Council Member Jimmy Medlin, a Navy Veteran, to

USS North Carolina Battleship Commission

October 31, 2005

LELAND – Governor Mike Easley has appointed Leland Town Council member Jimmy Medlin to the USS North Carolina Battleship Commission.  Medlin, a Brunswick County native and United States Navy Veteran, has served on the Leland Town Council since 2000.  He served in the Navy from 1958 until 1962, when he was honorably discharged.

“We are excited that Councilman Medlin is serving on the Battleship Commission,” says Leland Mayor Franky Thomas.  “The USS North Carolina is one of our region’s most prominent patriotic symbols, and I cannot think of anyone better qualified to serve on this commission than a community leader and Navy veteran like Jimmy Medlin.”

The USS North Carolina Battleship Commission was established by general statutes of the State of North Carolina in 1960 to provide an organization whose charter was to oversee the administration and operation of the USS North Carolina as a permanent memorial and exhibit for the State’s World War II veterans.  The Battleship Commission consists of 18 members selected by the Governor and includes the Secretary of Cultural Resources and the Secretary of Commerce, who serve as voting ex-officio members. The Secretary of Cultural Resources is permanently designated as Commission Secretary.   A chairman, vice chairman and treasurer are selected from the commission’s remaining 17 members.  For more information about the USS North Carolina, please visit http://www.battleshipnc.com.
