Town of Leland declares March 13-17
Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week

March 7, 2006

LELAND – The Town of Leland has declared March 13-17 as “Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week; the announcement follows a similar proclamation by Governor Mike Easley.

“Multiple Sclerosis affects more than 10,000 people throughout North Carolina,” says Leland Mayor Walter Futch  “The Town of Leland encourages all citizens to contribute to efforts to find a cure for this disease.”

“We encourage anyone in our community who has Multiple Sclerosis, or who has a family member with MS, to learn more about the resources, programs, information and support available through the National MS Society and other similar agencies,” adds Mayor Futch

“We are grateful that the Town of Leland has chosen to support our efforts to find a cure for MS,” says Bob Bryan, president of the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the National MS Society.

According to the National MS Society, North Carolinians raised more than $8.5 million in 2005 to help find a cure and develop effective treatments for Multiple Sclerosis.  North Carolina is also one of the leading fronts in the effort to find a cure for MS; over the past 15 years, more than $6.3 million has been granted to North Carolina’s universities for MS-related research.

Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. The National MS Society’s medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms. The National MS Society is committed to ensuring that people with MS have the information and quality care they need to live healthy, productive and independent lives. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the National Multiple Sclerosis Society today at www.nationalmssociety.org/nct or 1-800-FIGHT-MS to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.
