Leland Town Council adopts resolution

opposing Hugo Neu landfill

RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE HUGO NEU FACILITY

WHEREAS, Hugo Neu, a New York based corporation, is currently seeking permits for a large recycling facility off of Mount Misery Road in the Town of Navassa, North Carolina; and,

WHEREAS, Hugo Neu plans to transport the non-ferrous residual from its vehicle and appliance shredding operations to the facility and stockpile it in a landfill 350 feet high; and,

WHEREAS, the non-ferrous residual contains a wide variety of toxic materials such as mercury, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, benzene, ethylbenzene, PCBs, toluene, vinyl chloride and trichloroethylene; and,

WHEREAS, Brunswick County is home to beautiful beaches, extreme biodiversity, and a benign environment preferred by retirees and new families as the perfect blend of North and South; and,

WHEREAS, the Town of Leland has been inundated with communications from its citizens, developers and land owners, in addition to other concerned parties; all adamantly opposing the Hugo Neu project; and,

WHEREAS, opposition to the Hugo Neu facility has been expressed as concern for the environment, real property devaluation and adverse impacts on future growth opportunities for Northern Brunswick County; and,

WHEREAS,  the Town Council of Leland, North Carolina believes it their duty to act in accordance with the majority’s wishes; and,

WHEREAS,  the Town of Leland has previously requested the Town of Navassa reconsider its decision to allow Hugo Neu to site their metal reclamation facility within its corporate limits.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Town Council of Leland, North Carolina hereby expresses its disapproval and non-support for the siting of the Hugo Neu facility in the Town of Navassa or any other location in Brunswick County.  Furthermore it is also the resolve of the the Town Council of Leland to support any and all legal measures available to the various permitting agencies and the North Carolina General Assembly to stop the Hugo Neu facility.  

This resolution adopted this 9th day of June, 2005.
