The Town of Leland is seeking public input as part of the Resilient Coastal Communities Program (RCCP) through the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management (DCM). The goal of the project is to enhance resiliency to natural hazards, like flooding and storms, by building a framework to develop and implement a locally driven Resilience Strategy and implement projects or activities which reduce the impacts of those hazards.
To build a more resilient Leland, the Town is working with Moffatt & Nichol to develop a Resilience Strategy. This includes a Risk & Vulnerability Assessment Report and a Project Portfolio to help better reduce exposure, reduce sensitivity, and increase adaptability to multi-hazard threats such as flooding, storm surge, and/or sea level rise that may occur amidst storms and a changing climate.
“Given our proximity to the coast, the Town is susceptible to coastal and climate hazards which could impact our residents and businesses,” Town Engineer Adrianna Weber said. “This program will identify opportunities to increase the Town’s resiliency to ensure the prosperity of the Town and citizens for many years to come.”
Community engagement is critical to this project. Leland residents are invited to participate in this public survey, which will gauge priorities and preferences as a baseline for project plans. Participants will be asked about experiences with disasters caused by natural hazards like flooding, storm surge, and/or erosion. There will also be a public meeting to provide an overview of the project and a discussion of community vision and goals.
