Town of Leland Selected as Finalist for 2020 Cape Fear CREW Award

The Town of Leland has been nominated for a Cape Fear CREW Award of Excellence for its efforts to help shape Village Road into a mixed-use residential and business district.

Cape Fear CREW announced last week that the Harrington Village development agreement between the Town and Harrington Village Developers LLC was a finalist for the Dealmaker Award. The annual awards, which focus on the rapidly growing commercial real estate sector, recognize excellence and leadership in commercial real estate in the Cape Fear Region.

New this year, the Dealmaker category specifically “recognizes a person or team who demonstrated excellence, resourcefulness, collaboration and industry best practices while working on a successful transaction,” according to Cape Fear CREW. Last year, the Harrington Village project was selected by Cape Fear CREW as a finalist in the Economic and Community Enhancement category.

“We are delighted that the Town has been selected as a finalist for a CREW Award of Excellence for the second consecutive year,” said Gary Vidmar, Leland’s Economic and Community Development Director. “We are excited that CREW recognized the innovative public-private partnership, formed by the Town, that has led to the tremendous success of the Harrington Village and Harrington Square project and the positive impact this project has had on the Village Road corridor in Leland.”

To shape the overall character of Leland and create a downtown business district along Village Road, the Town began shifting from conventional zoning in 2011 by enacting form-based zoning code standards – a land-regulation approach that helps promote mixed-use, walkable developments – in what has been designated as the Gateway District, an area surrounding an approximately one-and-a-quarter mile stretch of Village Road.

As part of an overall plan for the Gateway District, the Town identified a 20-acre site along Village Road – now home to the $50 million Harrington Village and Harrington Square project – as a catalyst site that, properly developed for commercial and residential uses, would stimulate future growth in that area, in addition to increasing property values, providing jobs and improving traffic flow.

Cape Fear CREW will host its second annual awards program at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Wilmington Convention Center. The event is open to the public. More information and a full list of award finalists is available on CREW's award page on their website.
