Get Outside!

Spring has officially sprung, and what a great time of year it is to be outside!

Luckily, the Town of Leland has lots of opportunities for outdoor fun coming up, starting with a screening of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” at Leland Municipal Park on – you guessed it – May 4 (May the fourth be with you!). The following week on May 11, bring your sweetheart to the park for a special Date Night movie.

Also on May 11 is the Spring Art Market at Leland Cultural Arts Center, where you can browse and buy handmade home goods, clothing, accessories, art and lots more from local artisans.

Our Concerts in the Park series continues this month with a performance from regional favorite Jim Quick & Coastline on May 9. Put your shagging shoes on for this one!

And I’m so excited to be participating in the Leland We Don’t Know program on May 21. This bus tour is such a great way for newcomers and longtime residents alike to get a true inside look into our history and where we’re heading in the future!

Looking ahead to the near future, the Town is seeking volunteers to fill open seats on several of our board and committees – including the Parks and Recreation Board, the Economic Development Committee and the Planning Board – starting July 1. I am always impressed by the diversity of talent and interests we have here in Leland, so if you’d like to share your expertise – or just your passion for service – please read the full descriptions and submit your application by May 24.

There’s lots more to learn about and do in Leland! Keep reading below, and be sure to follow us on social media or visit our website for all the latest updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the Town of Leland’s policy on burning yard waste?

A: Open burning of natural vegetative debris only (trees, branches, leaves, shrubs, etc.) is permitted within the Town. However, it is not recommended because of your potential liability. The Town of Leland Fire Department assumes no liability in how and what you are burning, and it is up to you to ensure you are in compliance with all local and state open burning laws.

Permits are required prior to burning natural vegetation. Burn permits are free and may be obtained at the station located at 1004 Village Road, between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, and any other times staff is present at the station. Burn permits issued at the fire station are good for four days throughout Brunswick County. You may also get a permit online through the N.C. Division of Forest Resources (NCDFR). NCDFR permits are good for 30 days.

Keep in mind that regulations on open burning do not impact backyard barbecues or outdoor parties. Town ordinance and state law allow for open burning without a permit for the purposes of recreation and cooking. Examples include grills and outdoor fireplaces.

More information about open burning is available on the Town’s website or by calling the Town of Leland Fire/Rescue Department, (910) 371-2727.
