Gas Line Damage Results in Temporary Closures and Traffic Changes

Fire crews at Murphys USA

Just after 5 p.m. this evening, Leland Fire crews responded to a gas leak at 1116 New Pointe Boulevard.

The leak occurred when construction crews working in the area struck a gas line. Upon arrival, emergency personnel confirmed the leak and worked with utility partners to secure the area.

Utilities to the affected area have been secured and shut off. There is no ongoing threat to the public.

Businesses and residents in the affected area can expect gas service disruptions throughout the evening as Piedmont Natural Gas works to remove damaged sections of pipe and complete repairs. Piedmont Natural Gas will notify affected residents and businesses when service is ready to be restored. All inquiries regarding the restoration of gas service should be directed to Piedmont Natural Gas.

Dunkin', Chingon Taqueria, Omni Dental, 7-Eleven, and Leland Tobacco will remain closed until repair work is completed.

The incident has also resulted in temporary traffic impacts in the area. Drivers can enter Ocean Gate Plaza from U.S. Highway 17 and exit via New Pointe Boulevard. However, traffic will not be able to exit from Gateway Boulevard onto U.S. Highway 17. Drivers can expect traffic impacts until Piedmont Natural Gas completes its work.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
