Mayor Brenda Bozeman announced John Hacker as the 2025 Citizen of the Year during the Dec. 18 Town Council Meeting. Hacker is an active member of American Legion Post 68 in Leland and has dedicated his life to advocating for veterans.
Hacker served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, including a deployment to Vietnam as an Infantry Squad Leader with the Americal Division’s 198th Light Infantry Brigade. After his military career, he continued serving others through several leadership roles in California with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, including serving as Post Commander and a state-level chairperson for suicide prevention initiatives.
Since moving to Leland five years ago, Hacker has used his extensive knowledge and experience to support veterans not only in Brunswick County but across North Carolina. He has helped Post 68 become a recognized community leader in veteran suicide awareness, and his efforts continue to make meaningful and lasting impacts on veterans and their families.
The Town is grateful for Hacker’s service, leadership, and lasting contributions to our community.
