Leland Awarded Duke Energy Foundation Grant to Expand Tree Canopy

Duke Tree Grant

The Town of Leland is excited to announce it has been awarded a $3,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation to support the planting of approximately 24 trees along the Gateway Boulevard corridor.

The Town is continually looking for opportunities to enhance environmental sustainability and beautification, including the community’s tree canopy and shared public spaces. Incorporating native trees along sidewalks in urban areas helps create more comfortable, pedestrian-friendly environments while also reducing stormwater runoff and mitigating urban heat.

Residents can expect to see Town staff planting trees along the corridor in the fall and early winter. This timeframe is ideal for coastal North Carolina, allowing trees to establish strong root systems during cooler temperatures and with the support of seasonal rainfall.

The Duke Energy Foundation awards more than $30 million in charitable grants each year across the country.
