The Town of Leland is excited to announce the installation of four rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) at two crosswalks along Town Hall Drive. Funded by a $15,000 AARP Community Challenge Demonstration Grant with support from Toyota Motor North America, this project enhances pedestrian safety between the Leland Library, the Brunswick Center at Leland, Founders Park, and Town Hall.
RRFBs flash in a rapid, alternating pattern when activated and also include auditory alerts, providing support for pedestrians with differing abilities and helping everyone navigate the streets more safely, day or night.
These crosswalk improvements support the Town’s Safe Streets and Roads for All Comprehensive Safety Action Plan and the Integrated Mobility Plan by enhancing connectivity and improving safety for both pedestrians and drivers.
This year, AARP awarded funding to 383 nonprofit and government organizations nationwide. Only 60 were selected to receive the Demonstration Grant. Learn more about the AARP Community Challenge Demonstration Grant program.
The project location was updated to Town Hall Drive to ensure it could be funded primarily through the AARP Community Challenge Demonstration Grant. This change helps the Town maintain fiscal responsibility while maximizing the project’s impact.
