School Bus Crash Under Investigation in Leland

A school bus overturned on the westbound U.S. 74 exit ramp in Leland on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
LELAND, N.C. – Leland Police and Fire are responding to a school bus crash that happened Wednesday morning on the westbound U.S. 74 exit ramp from northbound U.S. 17.
 
Just after 11:30 a.m., emergency crews responded to reports of an overturned school bus. The bus was transporting members of the Douglas Byrd High School football team from Fayetteville following a 7-on-7 football event at South Brunswick High School.
 
There were 33 people on board, including 26 students and seven adults.
 
Four individuals, including two students and two adults, were transported by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries. All remaining occupants were transported by Brunswick County's mass evacuation bus to the hospital for evaluation. At this time, all reported injuries are considered non-life-threatening.
 
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Leland Police Department.
 
Drivers should expect the area to remain closed for several hours while first responders assist those involved, investigators process the scene, and the overturned bus is removed.
