The Town of Leland is looking for engaged, community-minded residents to serve on the Board of Adjustment, Economic Development Committee, and Planning Board. These volunteer roles give residents a chance to have a voice in shaping Leland’s growth, development, and future. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, May 26 at 5 p.m. Information about each advisory group and how to apply is below.
Board of Adjustment
The Board of Adjustment holds quasi-judicial public hearings to consider requests for variances from land use regulations where special conditions would create unnecessary hardships. The Board of Adjustment also hears appeals of determinations made by staff in interpreting and enforcing land use regulations.
The Board consists of five members and two alternates that meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m., on an as-needed basis. There will be four terms ending June 30, 2026.
Apply to serve on the Board of Adjustment.
Economic Development Committee
The Economic Development Committee establishes and oversees the Town’s economic development program and advises Town Council on initiatives that support sustainable economic growth. The Committee helps guide efforts to attract and retain businesses, advance strategic priorities, and foster a strong local economy.
Committee members should understand the emerging and expanding business sectors shaping Leland, including life sciences, information technology, medical technology, and aerospace. Two growing fields in Leland—marine science and renewable energy—are also becoming increasingly important. As these sectors continue to develop, it is beneficial for members to understand how they interact with one another and within the broader community.
The Committee consists of seven members that meet on the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. Members serve two-year terms. There will be three terms ending June 30, 2026.
Parks and Recreation Board
The purpose of the Parks and Recreation Board is to determine when park improvements are necessary, to review and recommend to Town Council a comprehensive parks and recreation plan for the Town, to commission parks and recreation studies, and to support and coordinate with staff in implementing any parks and recreation directives or plans approved by Town Council.
The Board consists of seven members that meet the last Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. on a bi-monthly basis. Members serve three-year terms. There will be three terms ending June 30, 2026.
Apply to serve on the Board of Adjustment, Economic Development Committee, or Parks and Recreation Board.
The Town Council will review eligible applications, conduct interviews on June 1 and 16 at 6 p.m. at Town Hall, and vote on appointments at the June 18 Regular Council Meeting. Once vacancies are filled, the Town Clerk’s Office will notify applicants of their application status and assist appointed members with onboarding.
