Town of Leland Monitoring Winter Storm

The Town of Leland is monitoring winter weather conditions for this weekend. 

Please be aware the Town does not maintain snowplows or brining equipment for road treatment. NCDOT crews have pretreated some major roads in the area. Residents are encouraged to avoid traveling during inclement weather whenever possible to ensure safety.

January 29, 2026, 3 p.m. NWS-Wilmington Update:

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the entire area. There is high confidence that extremely cold air will move into the region this weekend, bringing rare and dangerous wind chills. Hazardous winds and seas are expected along the coastal waters, creating dangerous conditions for mariners. Snow is also possible across the area, with moderate confidence in snowfall amounts and impacts.

A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for the entire area. There is high confidence in extreme cold air for the area this weekend, creating significant, rare wind chills. There is high confidence in hazardous winds and seas for the coastal waters over the weekend, creating dangerous conditions for mariners. There is increasing confidence for significant snow and associated impacts.

The forecast is calling for a winter storm that has the potential to create dangerous travel conditions and lead to power outages. Town of Leland Public Safety officials encourage community members to be prepared, stay safe, and keep the following safety tips in mind:

  • Stay home and off the roads.
  • If you must go out, slow down, give space, assume anything that looks wet is ice, and be extra cautious on bridges and overpasses.
  • Be aware that four-wheel drive isn’t effective on ice.
  • Keep devices charged.
  • Build or update your emergency supply kit.
  • Don’t put generators inside your home. Keep them outside due to carbon monoxide.
  • Be prepared for long-duration power outages.
  • Trim weak or damaged branches around your home.
  • Don’t leave vehicle wipers raised.
  • Don’t park your car under trees.

Residents are encouraged to examine their preparedness plans and be ready should they need to implement those plans.
