The Town of Leland has received five safety awards from the North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDOL) Safety Awards Program, recognizing the Town’s commitment to workplace safety. This marks the third time the Town’s Safety Committee has applied to the program, and the third consecutive year it has earned awards.
The Town received gold awards for Town Hall, the Leland Cultural Arts Center, the Municipal Operations Center, and Fire Station 53. The Town also received a silver award for Fire Station 52.
According to NCDOL, the Safety Awards Program honors private firms and public agencies across the state that achieve and maintain outstanding safety records. The program is designed to promote accident prevention and encourage safe workplace practices by recognizing employers and employees for their efforts.
To qualify for an annual safety award, a site must have had no fatalities during the calendar year and must have maintained either a perfect safety record or an incidence rate at least 50 percent below the industry average. The gold award is based on the days away, restricted, or transferred rate, which includes cases involving missed work, restricted duties, or job transfers. The silver award is based solely on cases with days away from work.
NCDOL representatives presented the awards to Town staff during a ceremony on June 25. The department presents more than 3,000 awards each year through this program.
