The Leland Police Department has launched a new seatbelt cover initiative to help first responders better identify and assist individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) during emergencies.
The seatbelt covers, available at no cost to Leland residents with ASD, alert first responders that an individual in the vehicle may need additional patience, guidance, or support during an emergency. The covers wrap around the seatbelt and secure with Velcro, making them easy to move between vehicles or use on backpacks when traveling.
Only Leland residents can request a seatbelt cover through the online form. A Leland Police Department Community Engagement Officer will contact residents to schedule a time to meet and receive the cover. One seatbelt cover will be provided per individual with ASD. If covers are unavailable, residents may be placed on a waitlist and notified when additional covers become available.
The Leland Police Department encourages individuals with ASD and their caregivers to attend the appointment together. The meeting provides an opportunity to meet officers, build relationships, and establish a connection before an emergency occurs.
Each seatbelt cover includes an interior slot where caregivers can write important information about the individual, such as their name, date of birth, triggers, medical concerns, and emergency contact information. The Police Department will not collect or store this information in police records.
The initiative is part of the department’s efforts to better support residents with ASD during emergencies. Leland Police officers are trained in Crisis Intervention and Helping Enhance Autism Response.
