The Town of Leland is taking proactive steps to reduce future flood risks in the Stoney Creek neighborhood by applying for a FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) subgrant. If awarded, the funding would allow the Town to purchase and remove 13 homes that have been repeatedly damaged by flooding.
The affected properties, located on Ruby Stone Court and Stoney Creek Lane, are all within a Special Flood Hazard Area and near wetlands. Following the damage caused by Potential Tropical Cyclone #8 in 2024, the Town submitted this application to FEMA to help protect residents and prevent future property damage.
FEMA has determined that the most practical approach is to fund the acquisition and demolition of these homes. Elevating the properties is not considered cost-effective, and taking no action would leave residents and homes vulnerable to future flooding. The project will comply with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including floodplain standards, and is consistent with the National Flood Insurance Program.
